The History
The current multilevel structure was build in 1890. On earlier maps, the footprint indicates a smaller home which was possibly destroyed by fire.
The Horan family arrived in the Grass Valley area sometime between 1851 and 1854. The 1870 Census lists the entire Horan family from parents John and Mary, including Annie who was born in 1861. In 1871 Annie?s mother Mary Horan was deeded the lot.
There is evidence that the ?new? home was built for Annie by two of her older brothers who ran Horan Brothers Construction. Annie ran a boarding house and always had rooms for the visiting priests and nuns that came to St. Patrick?s Catholic Church and St. Mary?s. Annie lived until she was 92 or 93 in 1954 and ran the home business most of the time.
The current structure appears to be true to the building of 1890 except for a mudroom/porch on the rear of the home. Most of the interior woodwork is original and there is even an original light fixture at the base of the stair rail. Unfortunately, an earlier resident covered all of the heart redwood on the stairway with paint.
415 W. Main Street in Grass Valley was selected as a Heritage Home because of it?s well-kept style and because the individuals associated with the home had a long relationship with the City of Grass Valley. (Historical information taken from 2006 Heritage Home Awards pamphlet).
